i don't think i ever blogged about the day i found out i was prego, so i am going to right now...more for documentation purposes than anything. better late than never, eh?
for months, lance and i always said we would "start trying" in july (2010). we weren't in a huge rush to have a baby or anything, but by that point we were settled into our cozy home...i had health insurance (finally!)...and we just felt like it was a good time to get started. also, we have both known so many couples who wait for years to have kids, only to find out they have a hard time getting pregnant, and if we were one of those couples we thought it best to get a nice head start! it seems like everyone told us to prepare for at least 3-6 months of "trying" so you can imagine my surprise on july 28 when i took a pregnancy test and the results were POSITIVE!
rewind a few weeks to july 9. it was just another friday night for the powell's...we were on the hunt for a new couch for our family room. as we were browsing for couches at bassett furniture, i suddenly got this sharp, horrible pain in my abdomen. when lance asked if i was okay, i said, "i think i'm pregnant." ha ha i think it may have been wishful thinking more than anything, but there is a part of me that still believes that is the day implantation occurred! sorry if that is tmi!!
for the next few weeks i was constantly telling lance "i don't feel right." it was nothing major...but my tummy felt unsettled a lot of the time, especially if i didn't eat frequently. i googled "earliest symptoms of pregnancy" to see if there was even a possibility of having symptoms that early, and from what i read, everyone is different but some people start having symptoms within a week or two. so naturally i went straight to the grocery store and bought a pregnancy test ha ha! the results came back negative.....but my next period was still not due for a couple more weeks so i held on to the possibility of my eggo being preggo. ;-) i think i probably took at least 5 tests over the next few weeks...all of which came back negative. i came to terms with the fact that i wasn't pregnant...but we had only been trying for a month and there are only a few days out of the month where it's even likely to conceive and we probably just missed those days....not to worry, there was always next month!
well, the day that my period was supposed to start came and went. i figured i must be late. which was weird to me bc my period is never ever ever late, it's always early! then another day came...i anxiously awaited aunt flo's arrival...but again, she never showed. i had all the symptoms of my period starting though...cramps, a bit of nausea, tired, starving, etc... but those are all symptoms of being pregnant, too! so i decided i would take ONE more pregnancy test.
that afternoon during my lunch break i went to the grocery store and bought one...the cheapest one they had bc i was sick of wasting my money on tests that came back negative. instead of waiting until i was in the comfort of my own home with a clean, sanitary toilet, i decided i couldn't wait and went right there in the nasty smith's bathroom. well i should say i tried to go...but i couldn't get anything out, not even a drop or two, haha! so then i got a huge bottle of water and drank it on my way back to work so that i would hopefully have the urge to go when i got back. when i finally needed to go to the bathroom i took my little pee stick in with me...did what i had to do...and just sat on the to-to and waited. while i was waiting i covered the part that said the test results.......i was sure that the results would be negative like all the others, but just in case they happened to be positive i wanted to be completely surprised! well a few minutes passed and i finally turned the stick over, and to my complete and utter astonishment i got a POSITIVE result!
i had been texting my bff whitney all day...she knew we were trying to get pregnant and when my period didn't come she told me to go take a test. this probably won't surprise anyone, but lance wasn't the first person i told i was pregnant - whit was! haha, my poor husband was second. and whit didn't believe me bc all day i assured her that i just knew my period was about to start. then i called lancey poo and told him....and - big surprise! - he didn't believe me either. so i sent him a picture of the pregnancy test with the + sign on it....and still he didn't believe me. he said i probably got a pregnant chick at work to pee on it for me. :) which is something i would do, so i understand why he thought that. anyway, i told him to go to the store and buy a pregnancy test so that the second i got home i could prove it to him! i still wasn't 100% convinced i was prego either...i mean, the test i took was a cheapo one so i thought it could be a mistaken test. nonetheless, i was on cloud 9 for the rest of the day. and as soon as work ended i went to the grocery store and bought the most expensive test i could find (haha, so me!). i went to my mom's house (she lived 2 minutes from where i worked) and peed again, and.....positive again!
by the time i got home lance was there waiting with the test. he made me do it in front of him (geez, we really must have some trust issues ;) )... and finally it sank in. he bought a bottle of "bubbly" along with the tests, just in case the results actually were positive. so we celebrated with some sparkling cider, then went out to dinner at market street. i claimed to have one of those rumored "cravings" just so he would let me pick the restaurant! haha jk.
so there you have it, the day (and month!) i found out there was a bun in the oven. the day i found out was truly one of the best days of my life. lance and i took a picture at dinner that night, and i think you can see on both of our faces how excited we were...there really was a "glow." and every day since then my excitement has grown stronger and stronger. throughout the past 9 months i think i have felt every emotion in the book - excitement, fear, anticipation, anxiety, anger (not about being pregnant, just anger in general), happiness, sadness.....pregnancy has been an emotional roller coaster for me, but again, i know it will all be worth it when our baby finn finally gets here! and i am finally at the point where my excitement outweighs all of the other emotions i have been feeling...i simply cannot wait!
hurry up baby finn, momma and daddy can't wait to meet you! :)

I haven't ever taken a pregnancy test. I bet you won't next time either....I was lying in bed and said, " I have a pain right HERE." and Gary and I looked at eachother and said "Pregnant". (in a good way) but it seems like some people can just TELL. I love that so many friends are pregnant and due so close together. Think back to your birthday party at the McConnels.....almost all the women there knew they were pregnant. : ) We're excited for you and Lance. You will be great parents! I honestly love being a mom.
That's a cute story! I am so excited for you two - you're going to be a great mom! :)
Love it!! What a cute story, thanks for sharing! Even before you wrote anything about that picture I thought to myself how happy you guys looked and that you already had the pregnancy glow. So excited for you guys!!! Come soon, baby Finn!

I can't believe that you'll be having baby Fin anytime now! I hope my anxiety goes away once you, Jen, and Mary all have your babies. Can't wait to hear when Fin arrives!
